Citrus Splash: Reflections on Teaching the Art of Zesty Mixology

As a certified mixologist and instructor at Murray’s Fools Distilling Co. (MFDC), I love introducing cocktail enthusiasts to the vibrant world of citrus-based mixology. Last week's class was a particular delight, and I'm excited to share some highlights and insights from our zesty adventure.

Setting the Stage: We kicked off the session with our signature welcome cocktail, Life’s A Peach, a refreshing blend that showcases MFDC's Osprey Aquavit and unique approach to modern mixology. As the class sipped, I shared the story of how MFDC came to be, setting a tone of innovation and passion that would carry through the entire class.

Diving into Citrus: Our journey began with an exploration of citrus fruits. I always enjoy watching faces light up as we delve into the nuances of different citrus varieties and the contrasts between store-bought and fresh squeezed. From the bright acidity of lemons to the complex bitterness of limes, we discussed how each fruit can transform a cocktail.

Hands-On Mixing: The heart of any good mixology class is, of course, the actual mixing. We focused on two classic cocktails adding a signature twist to each:
  1. Basil Lemon Drop Martini: A classic that never fails to impress with its perfect balance of sweet and sour.
  2. The Westside (a minty cucumber Southside riff): A refreshing gin-based cocktail that allowed us to experiment with muddling techniques.

Technique Spotlight: Throughout the class, we covered essential techniques that elevate home bartending:
  • Muddling: Gently releasing flavors without over-bruising the ingredients.
  • Shaking: Creating the right dilution and temperature for each drink.
  • Garnishing: Adding that final touch that engages all the senses.
Tasting and Socializing: As an instructor, the most rewarding part is always the end of the class. Watching everyone enjoy their creations, share tips with each other, and get excited about trying new recipes at home is truly gratifying.

Looking Ahead: For those inspired to continue their mixology journey, I always recommend starting with quality tools and ingredients. Here are some of my top picks:
